Club Details With around 50 Members and 30 or so Non Members Shooting at the ground each Sunday that the shoot operates, we are a medium sized, friendly, well run and challenging shoot.
We try to cater for Guns of all abilities and make sure that the targets reflect the abilities of the majority of shooters who attend. We have had some of the Counties top Guns attending during the Club's history. The Club started in 1980, and during this period we have only had one person straight the layout. This is not to say that the targets are impossible. We always lay on targets that are hit-able, but often tricky and difficult to read. The object is to constantly challenge the guns who attend with some fast, close targets, some longer, floaters, driven, risers, crossers and going away targets are mixed in to provide a layout which is both difficult to read, and enjoyable to master. We use a mixture of Standard, Midi, Mini and Battue to provide the most interesting course. A typical layout would include two stands where the accomplished gun might hit all 10, one stand where a 10 is possible with a good degree of concentration and skill, and two stands where a lot of concentration, work and skill is needed to kill all 10 of the birds. This allows the less able shooters to have a round where at least two of the stands are "possibles", and a few hit on the more difficult stands will give a creditable score.
The shoot has
been through quite a number of changes since starting the Club, however, there
are still a number of the founding members who still shoot regularly at the
Club. We have been located at the
Dell Lane Ground
for the whole period, but have also had shoots at the Riverside Ground at
Little Hallingbury and County Farm at High Roding.
Fortunately, we
have never been bothered by noise complaints, due both to the geography of the
ground and the position of the shoot in relation to the local residences.
Fixtures are
fortnightly throughout the year and we traditionally hold a shoot on Boxing
Day. We sometimes miss out a shoot during November. This is Remembrance Sunday
when we do not shoot out of respect. We consider the sound of gunfire may be
offensive to those taking part in the local ceremonies to remember friends and
family killed during the World Wars and other conflicts. Our members are fully
in support of this policy.
The Club caters
for
Novices and
those just beginning their shooting career, with coaching available, and the
usual friendly and well intentioned advice from the other Guns. If you are a
Novice, or even someone who has always wanted to begin Clay Shooting but has
never had the opportunity, we would be happy to see you. Novices are
especially welcome, however if you require a lesson, please telephone first,
to book. Coaching is available - and very
reasonably priced. The Club has a Section 11 Exemption granted by Essex Police
and therefore novices who have not yet obtained a Shot Gun Certificate may
shoot on the ground under supervision. If you are a novice and interested in
taking up Clay Pigeon Shooting - come along, we will be happy to advise you.
Spellbrook is a
small, friendly clay pigeon shooting club with a membership of around 50. We
are open to non-members, and fair number of non-members turn up each week.
There are rarely queues on any of the stands, and this is especially so for
those who like to shoot early. We shoot fortnightly on Sunday Mornings and the
format is 50 bird English Sporting.
The shoot is held
on farmland, there are Car Parking facilities [hyperlink - parking - bookmark]
, but these are on grass and during wet weather it can be a little muddy,
however, excluding unusual weather, you definitely do not need a 4 wheel drive
to get to us.
The club has
awards a trophy, or a Free Entry, to the High Gun at each fixture and the
rules allow for a Member to win a maximum of three trophies per year, and
non-members may win two trophies per year. This allows the medium ability and
up and coming guns to be able to compete, and win trophies, during the year.
Membership
allows a £1.00 reduction per round, and Free Entry in our traditional Boxing
Day Members Handicap Shoot. Prospective new members are always welcome - see
the
Membership page for details and a form..
The shoot has a Club House, based in a 20' container, on site where entries are taken. You can also purchase Snacks and refreshments - the cheeseburgers and bacon rolls and are a favourite here. Safety is an important consideration in any Shooting Club and here Spellbrook has an exemplary record. The Club has been in operation for more than 15 years and we are proud to say that we have never had a single incident involving guns in all that time. The Club is CPSA (Clay Pigeon Shooting Association) affiliated and carries full Public Liability Insurance. The Rules of the Club incorporate the Safety Rules and the Club reserves the right to expel any person acting in a manner likely to endanger themselves or others. The Club is situated at Spellbrook on the West Essex and East Hertfordshire border, between Harlow and Bishops Stortford. There is a Map and Instructions on how to get there to be found on this web-site.
